Rule One Issue 8 now available

Read the lates issue of this online Gloranthan fanzine:

  • Editor Roderick Robertson says the following about this issue:

Stew Stansfield tickles our palate with not one, but two duck-oriented articles: a plunder item and a character sketch. David Millians continues his prolific Kraloreli output with a look at the Tswo-Shen, the Ghosts of Kralorela. Greg Stafford gives us some early myths about Genertela, and Roderick Robertson gives us a High-flying, low-down-and-dirty Lunar military unit.

    Enjoy the issue!

And, of course, I’m calling for articles for Issue 9 (August release, deadline for articles is July 21)
I’d really like to get some more Gloranthan adventures – no need to worry if they are written for HeroQuest, RuneQuest, D&D or My Little Pony – I’ll take them all. Other articles happily accepted as well!

Lord Meriatan is ready for War, are you?

    Heroes: Lord Meriatan
Position: Lord Marshall of the Army of the Swallow
Magic: Idealist Church; Noble Adept of Saint Carpattia, unique heroquesting powers
Perhaps the greatest Loskalmi hero of his generation, Lord Meriatan was born the son of a knight in the city of Salona. From an early age, he showed a keen intelligence and an instinctive grasp of Loskalmi honor and chivalry. There was never any doubt that he would achieve great things, given the opportunity, and today, some even describe him as ‘Siglat reborn’. He became a wizard-knight at the age of twenty-two, an almost unheard of feat, and championed the cause of his kingdom as a knight errant, as well as serving in the Order of the Griffin.
Meriatan has always possessed an unshakable faith in the virtue and inherent superiority of the Loskalmi way of life. He has pursued this through the military, and, while he cares deeply for the common people he protects, he has little time for those who argue for peace or who extol Loskalm’s non-martial virtues above those that he himself typifies. Artwork, romance, and academic learning are all important, he argues, but they mean nothing without a strong army to protect them and to overthrow their enemies in foreign lands. He believes firmly that the armies of Loskalm are the greatest in the world, and that the Idealist creed is capable of creating the perfect man, supreme in all forms of endeavor. The road to ultimate domination of all Fronela will not be easy, and will require great strategists as well as armies of brave knights, but it is a road that Loskalm must follow, and one that, in the long run, it will be victorious in. For Meriatan, no other option is possible.
Five years ago, while campaigning as a knight errant in central Fronela, Meriatan saw first hand the atrocities of the Kingdom of War. He grasped immediately that they were his nation’s nemesis; the embodiment of all that Loskalm was not, save only for their great military prowess. He came to see the defeat of the Kingdom of War as not only a moral imperative, but as the great proving-ground from which Loskalm could launch its conquest of all Fronela. By defeating the forces of death and horror that the Warlords represent, Loskalm would prove itself worthy of rule, and demonstrate to all the superiority and inherent rightness of their ideals.
It became clear to him that the only way to achieve these goals was to leave behind errantry, and seek military command. He rose rapidly through the ranks, and, as Colonel of the Washland regiment, petitioned the King for permission to forge a special army to combat the Kingdom of War. After the fall of Perfe in 1619, he received his wish, and founded the Army of the Swallow. In the months since, the new army has grown hugely in size, and Meriatan has shown tremendous skill in marshalling its resources, and turning it into an efficient fighting machine. He has built fortifications along the Junoran border, using magic to raise them in a matter of months, as well as offering help to the Junorans themselves against their encroaching foe. He has gathered great heroes around him, becoming one of the most powerful and influential people in the Kingdom almost overnight.
And now, he is eager for the battle.

I post this as an appetiser for the upcoming Book of Glorious Joy, Meriatan is one of the excellent Heroes of Loskalm that are detailed in the book, which is currently in the layout wars – with numerous layers of polish being applied on the advice of the Grand Magus Ben Monroe (long time ally of Chaosium and now firm friend of D101) who is checking the final layout.

    Soon my friends, soon ;)

Book of Glorious Joy: The end is in sight!

Currently in the very last phases of layout.

Next week it will go out for final checking by my hand picked nit-pickers and then to print proof.  When I’ve got the print proof,  I’ll open up a special pre-order.  Full details when I make it, but it will be the Book + PDF, with the option of picking up a very limited edition T-shirt with the following design by BoGJ artist Peter Town.

Swords of Malkion by Peter Town

Swords for Malkion by Peter Town

Again I’ll post a proper preview of the book when pre-ordering opens, but here is the map of Loskalm

I anticipate the book will go on general release via DriveThruRpg (both Pdf & POD print) first couple of weeks of May.

    Happy Birthday Mr Meints

This fine day I’m taking a moment to send positive birthday vibes in the direction of Rick Meints, the quiet half of Moon Designs who is responsible for the Gloranthan Classics ( a major achievement – updating the layout adding new art,  adding related content – basically rescuing these classics from the preserve of overpriced Ebay collectors) and the crisp clear layout of Moon Designs HeroQuest books, amoungst many other things.

So happy birthday Rick ! :)

Why should D20/Pathfinder/Savage Worlds have all the fun?

I spend a fair amount of time browsing DriveThruRpg.com.  I’ve a vested interest since all the D101 catalogue is available via that store front.  As a small press publisher its a pretty amazing experience, one which is due to get even better soon as I transfer all the D101 releases over to DTRPG.com’s Print on Demand service, which does very reasonably priced hard covers  unlike Lulu.com.  As a Gloranthafan its a bit depressing.  Amidst the books I can get from my FLGs, cheesecake clip art and the RPG scenery/floor-plans  its mainly short pdf releases for D20, Pathfinder and Savage Worlds.  Quick cheap pdfs of about 5-30 pages in length of varying quality.

I must confess to dipping my toe in the short pdf market with the “Ye Little Books of HeroQuest Fantasy” pdfs, which sold quite admirably and despite me reaching the end of that series prematurely, for various reasons, convinced me that given the right circumstances I’d do it again.

While thinking of doing a Pathfinder supplement (I’ve recently discovered my old school D&D joy and the idea of turning that into something profitable which can subsidise the art effort of less profitable areas of D101 is too good to resist) , thoughts of doing a short  Gloranthan pdf release once a month kept on circulating in my brain.  I had a quick chat with Jeff Richard, as a licensing check and also to pick his brains for ideas and he agrees that given the right type of subject matter it would be a goer.

So if I was to do this, what would you like to see?

Jeff is mapping, oh yes he is mapping!

So there I’m on google chat one morning and Jeff (as in Richard Creative Director of Moon Design, publish of HeroQuest) pipes in,”Do you want to see something cool I’ve been working on?”, “Sure” I go. He then drops me an email with a hand drawn map of Tarsh with notes on.

Intially I’m not impressed. “Jeff what are doing? you’ve finally flipped and are sending me your scribbles that they are allowing you to do as Art Therapy in the Chalana Arroy care home.  What is it?”

    To which he replies

They are based on notes and maps from Greg that I have assembled in one place.

Greg has pages and pages and pages of notes on population figures. And far more maps than anyone realizes.

I’ve got maps showing the cultural distribution areas in the Lunar Empire and so on.

Heck I have maps of every 50 years in Peloria from the Dawn to 1600.

You can see more of Jeff’s ‘doodles’ here in his post over at Glorantha.com

He gives more commentary about the specific detail of the maps, but what does this mean for us fans?

First off this will be going in the Gloranthan guide and other upcoming Moon Designs books. Even if you are not a big fan of such minutiae, I’m big on ambiguity about numbers in my games (how many people live there Newt? “oh lots! about as much as London”), such good solid information is going to make designing credible stories much easier.

Also Jeff’s willing to share unpublished maps with fan publishers. I’m going to be taking advantage of this for an upcoming Ralios book I’m working on (details to follow shortly in a seperate post).

Winter is over the bear awakes!

Its been a long hard one folks, that has quite frankly at times left me feeling ravaged and drained.  Quietly in the background I’ve been working on the Book of Glorious Joy (now laid out awaiting the very last bits of art) and mulling over Gloranthan Adventures issue 2 (later this year) and Hearts in Glorantha issue 5 (Late Spring/Summer).  But now spring has sprung in this here neck of the woods expect me to be much, much more active on this blog. Lots of good Gloranthan stuff out there that demands to be written about.

After all why should the Old School Renassiance have all the fun.

This post is brought to you by the number five, and the words Joy and Ashes

Ok here we go a little update thingy for all things Gloranthan and D101

The Book of Glorious Joy – in layout as we speak – slipped slightly but on for a March release :)

Hearts in Glorantha issue 5 – content being confirmed now, will announce in a couple of days what’s going to be in Issue 5 and then commission art. April/May release.

From the Ashes - This is a HiG special, made up from content that used to be on the Ring of HeroQuest Narrators website about five years, plus a few new pieces (articles/scenarios) from that period. Not 100% sure of the contents since I need to track down some of the Authors and get their permission, but this issue will be full of story seeds (Heroic Tales), Adventures (The Black Ziggurat in its full original version, and Neil Smith’s The Peace Process) and useful NPCs for your game.
